Edward
Julius Detmold and his twin Charles
Maurice were born in 1883 in London. Precocious
talents the Detmold twins were collaborating and
exhibiting paintings of natural history subjects at
the Royal Academy by the time they were 13. The
brothers had illustrated 'Pictures from Birdland' and
the 'Jungle Book', when Maurice committed suicide at
the age of 24. Edward went on to illustrate 'The
Fables of Aesop' and 'The Fantastic Creatures of
Edward Julius Detmold', before illustrating
Maeterlinck's 'The Life of the Bee'. Although there
is no official record of E. J. Detmold's death, it
has been suggested that he himself committed suicide.
